Awesome or Invasive?

Breathtaking… that’s the only word that captured the golden surroundings as we walked the well-trodden trails this past weekend. Familiar paths, transformed with a cloak of yellow brought a genuine smile to my face that matched the sunshiny day around us.

An invasive species is an organism that is not indigenous, or native, to a particular area.
Invasive species can cause great economic and environmental harm to the new area.
Many invasive species thrive because they outcompete native species for food.

“That’s invasive, you know,” my friend volunteered.

In fact, it didn’t surprise me because the plant was EVERYWHERE.

Lesser Celandine
Commonly known as Fig Buttercup

I was certain that last spring… a mere spattering of pretty, little, yellow flowers graced these paths. Which got me wondering…

Something so beautiful. How could it be so damaging?

Which got me thinking… how many other ‘wonderful, lovely, eye-catching experiences, when in excess, can be damaging …or even destructive?

As a life-long student in pursuit of a balanced life, this thought remains with me… challenging me to consider… What constitutes “too much…” Which actions “too invasive…” Which cultures “too harmful…?”

When does the damage outweigh the beauty of a moment? When does one’s awesomeness take TOO MUCH from other simpler amazing moments? And what practices do I need to adopt, to ward off getting caught in the ‘moment’ …forgetting the lasting effects which many more will be affected by…

So much to think about, as I walk  the yellow path that winds through the woods…
